Frost Park Fountain 2.0

I just got the "thumbs up" from two Tacoma Public Works employees testing the fountain at Larry Frost Memorial Park. "It works!" one grinning worker hollered at me over the splash of water while I shot a few photographs. Indeed, just in time for fall/winter, the fountain is up and running again.

It is correct and fitting that the fountain that is a key element to this important park is operational again. According to Bob Lane's TNT article at the time, five years after the park's construction, it was former Councilman Dick Sonntag who sponsored the resolution to dedicate the park to Officer Larry Frost and all City employees who have died while serving their community. Of Officer Frost and his South End duties Sonntag said, "he ran his beat, I tell you." The park's dedication was attended by crowd of over 100 people, including Sonntag, Mayor Mike Parker, Robert Deutscher, chairman of the Civil Service Board, and members of the Frost family - three of them police officers.

"I'm proud to be a mayor of a city where people care about each other." -Mayor Mike Parker

The ideas behind all these pet projects like the Frost Fountain are really wonderful ideas. The execution of these ideas here in Tacoma leaves something to be desired. And that thing is some sort of regular and periodic funding for maintenance. I could point to other pet projects of bygone city councils which are experiencing destruction by neglect. If we are going to have a city which isn't going to maintain the project...then why even fund it in the first place?
