Spanish Steps Update

Rehab completed by year's end?

'Momentum continues for Spanish Steps rehabilitation'

I wrote that headline in July 2007 for an article on the Spanish Steps rehabilitation. At the time, the City was expected to solicit bids in early-August 2007, award a contract in October, and complete the project in early-2008.

That was almost three years ago. The only thing that seemed to happen was this.

Last month, however, Tacoma's Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) re-visited the issue, and there appears to be renewed energy. On March 10, the LPC approved the specifications for the @ million-dollar renovation. Public Works staff told me last week the City has been accepting bids since March 9, and will continue to do so until 11:00 a.m. on April 13. Once Tacoma City Council makes a final decision on a contractor in early-May, the project could begin in mid-May and be completed by mid-September.

For more information, read the article I wrote for Thursday's edition of the Tacoma Daily Index.

Good to know, now if the City will act on reopening the Old Town Dock. I trust that with the Old Town Dock it is just a repair job and no fancy historical preservation consultants will need to generate reports.

Come on Tacoma, you can do it!

Clean up blight and repaid historical structures, it's not rocket science...

where will all the teenage flickr models go for that 'true grit' backdrop if they fix up the Spanish steps? They already bulldozed the ruins of the insane asylum right?

There are countless places left for them in Tacoma RR including Commerce Street at your back porch.

A do-able plan to remake one of Tacoma's dusty jewels . Good news indeed.

Perhaps we can have a celebration after every 2% of the project is done like they did with the Murray Morgan Bridge?

If I recall, there have been Tacomics based on the blighted condition of the Staircase.
