Tacoma's Billionaire Visit

While writing this magazine article a few years ago, several people I interviewed told me that when the German flag flies atop the Columbia Bank tower in downtown Tacoma, it means Erivan Haub -- German billionaire / part-time Pierce County resident / downtown Tacoma developer & property owner -- is in town.

I spotted the flag this morning . . .

Welcome back Mr. Haub - free for lunch? ;-)

Good scoop!

That's a neat tradition! Hmmmm... Haub is in town... the city has new developer for Luzon... the Luzon is across the street from Haub's property. Could it be Haub is the new developer for the Luzon?

ps- Don't forget, Haub's money is from a German grocery store chain. Maybe they could open a US flagship store right here!

Why don't you guys ever put up flags when I come to town? I mean I travel all the way from Lakewood and you can't put up a lousy flag? :) hehehe (JK)

Or perhaps he is in town to continue negotiations on his highrise proposal for Russell?

Sure, it's less likely, seeing as how our favorite local employer has seen its pocketbook and employee base shrink significantly, but I'll throw that one onto the speculation pile.

Thanks for clearing that up, with my middle aged eyes I thought it was the rainbow flag up there this morning.

German grocery store chain huh? I have heard that Trader Joes is owned by a privately held German company . Anyone know if this is the German grocery store chain?

I find it amazing that his presence here is announced so loudly. If I had to speculate why a billionaire would choose to live in Pierce County part time (is it Tacoma?) I'd have to say that it's so that he can march into Russell and tell them what he doesn't like about how they are managing his money.

Further, if they eke out an additional .0000003% return, then he'll put up a new building for them.

That's somebody else. Give Haub a Google- you'll find it. I can't remember the name of the store.

I'd love a German grocery! It'd be great to get in touch with my ethnic roots... though, admittedly they're old. My dad's family came to America in the late 1600s

I like the fact that Haub sees the good in Tacoma instead of giving us the finger to go to Seattle.

Noted this morning: the German flag has been removed.
