Tacoma's Green Skyline

Pacific Plaza's rooftop garden

From my office window here at Index 'world headquarters,' today I've been following the progress of a team of workers high atop Pacific Plaza downtown. If you are familiar with the project, you know the developers are including a green roof with soil and vegetation as part of the $35 million renovation of the old parking garage.

More details on the project here and here.

This is what the rooftop looked like on a wet and cold day in January . . .

This is what it looked like this morning . . .

The tan stuff on the left is topsoil. Here's a closer look at one of the workers with rake in hands . . .

Workers have been blowing the topsoil out of a large hose hooked up to to this truck . . .

They're making quick work . . .

I thought the Turkish baths were cool. But this rooftop garden is another neat aspect of the project. I'll post more photos to the TDI blog as progress continues.

Pretty cool. What the heck are the triangular thinks on top? Sun roofs?

Also, I see that the 12th street hill climb got funded. I hope they are able to open up the walkway enough for people to feel safe to use the pathway again which has been cursed for the last 40 years.

It looks like they're skylights. This is pretty cool. I think it's a good improvement from what it looked like before... but that doesn't mean that it's okay that we do this for Park Plaza North.

I will buy a ticket to see that thing be imploded or destroyed with a wrecking ball. It's near a light rail stop, there should be a grocery store and housing in its place.

How about if we use that method with the North Park Plaza Parking Garage?

Thanks for the bird's eye update Todd. I saw that truck last week and was pretty impressed! It'd be great it we could see more green roofing happening around here considering we are the everGREEN state.

Yeah, that is waaay cool. I wonder if anyone has considered some public tours of some of these features before tenants start moving in...

The look of the building sure has improved. Let's see how much life it can sustain.

The taggers will enjoy having a nicely landscaped area to picnic on when they finish their creations.

@TDI -- Can you snag and post and updated pic? With the building looking so good I'd love to see what they did with their (much larger than mine) green roof. Thanks!
