Tacoma again rallies, this time all the way
Tacoma Tide FC keep falling behind and coming back. On Sunday afternoon in Abbotsford, British Columbia, the Yellows fell behind early again before coming all the way back for a 4:3 victory over the Mariners. After six matches Tacoma have one win, two losses and three draws.
The home side started brightly and in the early stages Abbotsford scored not one but two goals to take a quick 2:0 advantage over Tacoma. “We got off to another bad start,” said Tide assistant coach Mike Jennings. “Their second goal woke us up.” Chris Sanders brought the Tide to within one at about the 20 minute mark with his third goal of the season.
It was 2:2 about ten minutes later when Michael Uyehara, getting his first start for the Yellows, collided in the box with a group of defenders and the Mariners' goalkeeper. He leveled the match on a flick-in. “Uyehara played well in left midfield,” Jennings noted. “Along with the goal he also had some excellent crosses.” Still, the Tide managed to fall behind again after the Mariners scored to make the halftime score 3:2.
Cam Vickers crossed to Chris Sanders, who put Tacoma level at 3:3 midway into the second half. Then with just under 15 minutes remaining Abbotsford were called for a penalty kick. Daniel Gray, who had converted a PK on Friday in the 89th minute at Vancouver to help the Tide draw that match 1:1, stepped to the spot again, and again put a marker up for the Tide. The 4:3 scoreline held up as Tacoma notched their first PDL win of the 2011 season.
“It feels like a weight is off of our shoulders,” Gray said of the first victory. “We kind of gave them two early goals, but to our credit we fought back.” Gray suffered a head gash on Friday and went to Burnaby General Hospital to get nine stitches on his forehead. He says the cut did not effect his play on Sunday. “This time around I hit the ball towards the bottom left,” he said of his winning goal. “The goalkeeper moved the other direction.” Gray crossed the border back into the USA with the Tide with a bit of extra paperwork. The Canadian hospital required a large deductible to do the stitching procedure. The paperwork will allow Gray and the Tide to file an insurance claim back in the States.
The Tide host the Portland Timbers U23s on Wednesday night June 8 at Stadium Bowl at 7 PM. All fans bringing any kind of noisemaker get in for only five bucks. “We feel good after this win,” concluded Gray. “We battled the Timbers well down there last week in a 2:0 loss. This time we think we can make it even closer.”
