Tacoma, WA---Tacoma Tide FC rallied from a 2:0 deficit to earn a 2:2 draw with the North Sound SeaWolves on Friday May 13th in the club’s United Soccer Leagues PDL home and regular season opener.
The SeaWolves took the early lead at Stadium Bowl when Abduwali Aman struck from inside the box in the 7th minute. Tacoma went on the attack for a good portion of the rest of the first half, and created several good chances to even the score.
It was North Sound though who would get the match’s second goal. Vini Oliviera found himself open on the right side of the goal mouth and Aman’s pass left him with little work to do but slot the ball home. The SeaWolves led 2:0 in the 44th minute.
Tacoma gave themselves hope when they caught North Sound just moments after the restart. University of Washington forward Quinton Beasely broke on the left side then headed a loose ball just off of the fingertips of SeaWolves goalkeeper Joseph Galbraith and into the back of the net. The 45th minute goal sent Tacoma into halftime with a boost of momentum.
The Tide had the better of possession in the second half, though North Sound created a few close calls that kept Tacoma’s defense busy. Finally in the late stages the Yellows drew a penalty kick call when midfielder Daniel Gray was one of a pack of Tide players to enter the box on the attack. The North Sound defense stopped the attack as more than one Tide player was tripped up.
Daniel Gray stepped up to the penalty spot in the 82nd minute and calmly converted his try to send the opening night record crowd of 226 into celebration. The Tide had several chances to grab a winner but the final whistle sounded with the score remaining at 2:2.
Before the match Tide players handed out yellow carnations to fans in the front row of Stadium Bowl. After the match players mingled with fans on the pitch signing autographs on 2011 schedule posters.
“I was pleased with the atmosphere in Stadium Bowl,” Tide owner Mike Jennings said after the match. “Even with 200+ sprinkled in the giant bowl, it still seemed very lively. I would say that after one match I am more encouraged (about Tide support) than I have been in quite some time.”
The Tide have their first standing point with the draw. The SeaWolves scored their first goals as an Everett franchise and earned their second straight draw.
Tacoma next plays at Redmond High School on Monday May 23 against Washington Crossfire. The Yellows return to Stadium Bowl on Friday May 27th at 7 PM in the Narrows Bridge Bell rivalry against the Kitsap Pumas.
