School Levy: predict the outcome
f'sho
This seems the be a very popular topic.
A few folks think more taxes in this economy is a terrible thing, a few people think that NOT taxing more in this economy is a terrible thing.
So, let's put that aside for a moment and remember one important thing: people vote with their wallets, and people vote based on how they feel they'll be affected.
That being said, place your bets on how you think this will turn out. Please don't get into another shouting match. We already have like 3 threads for that. Just put your honest best prediction on the results.
I'll go first.
Given the circumstances, I predict 59% no, 41% yes
You?

by jenyum on 2/8/2010 @ 6:55pm | I predict 59% yes, 41% no on Prop 1.
52% yes, 48% no on Prop 2. But it's gonna be a squeaker so every vote counts! vote vote vote! |
by Mofo from the Hood on 2/8/2010 @ 7:48pm | Prop 1. Yes 52.5% The revealed operating budget @ 22.4% will shock & awe people to begrudgingly vote yes.
Prop 2. The addition of the computer stuff might tip the balance negative, but I'm betting Yes 51% |
by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 2/8/2010 @ 8:03pm | I know a lot of people that are going to vote no on both parts. They are fed up with the huge amount of bureaucracy and lack of accountability that comprises the Tacoma School District. They are happy to fund education but do not believe that their money is being spent wisely. Some do not like the idea of teachers and administrators getting pay raises in this time of high unemployment and diminished expectations by so many of the Tacoma residents. I'm all for the schools, children, and levies but fear that both will fail in this economy. I'd like to a win on both but I think they'll have a hard time getting these past the public this time. If the school district doesn't show some belt tightening I suspect the voting public will not give it a yes vote. I have not been brainwashed by fredo, but I know reality when it bites me on the butt. |
by NineInchNachos on 2/8/2010 @ 8:31pm | I don't think many folks will vote either way. |
by david on 2/9/2010 @ 12:28pm | I knew a teacher with a computer so slow that he wasted thousands of dollars of taxpayers money in time wasted waiting for it to do what he needed it to do over the years (minutes=money!). A $300 computer would have solved the problem for years to come, but a short tern gain of $300 is more important to some people than thousands of dollars of wasted taxpayer money. Improper funding costs a lot. Schools aren't a business, they are a requirement. |

Surprise, government employees could care less about wastiing taxpayer money. Your posting provided eloquent proof. |
by jenyum on 2/9/2010 @ 1:02pm | deleted my comment because it's off topic. So are you, Fredo. |
by greenfringegarden on 2/9/2010 @ 1:31pm | I really personally cannot predict the outcome because I have not heard anti-levy sentiment in general but I do not know if anyone is calling voters to tell them to vote no unless Fredo has alot of friends. I am praying both props pass but I am not confident. |
by Erik on 2/9/2010 @ 5:10pm | Too close to call.
We will know the results soon. |
by david on 2/9/2010 @ 5:33pm | Fredo, I was referring to governments corporate mentality of short term financial goals that don't accomplish the needs of the people. When the government is treated or acts like a corporation it fails because it is a public institution, not a corporation. Take its money away and say it must cut corners to survive and the government becomes exactly what you were trying to keep it from becoming. |
by david on 2/9/2010 @ 5:34pm | I voted! I was there at about 3:30 and they said they had less than 50 people so far! Very sad... who knows what direction it will go in with numbers like those eh? Hopefully since the Yes were the ones working their tails off, they'll tip the scale. |
![]() by NEAL on 2/9/2010 @ 5:51pm | Tacoma supports its schools.
We are a working class town that has the dignity an respect to support our public education. Both will pass. |
by jenyum on 2/9/2010 @ 5:56pm | I've talked to people today who haven't voted in a long time, but they are voting yes on the levies. I have a lot of hope. I'll be over at Levy Campaign Headquarters at 8:15 to see the first returns come in. |
by jenyum on 2/9/2010 @ 9:15pm | ...and the (early) returns are: Prop 1: 62% yes Prop 2: 58% yes Thank you, Tacoma! Additionally, all South Sound school levies/bonds appear to be poised for passage. |
![]() by NEAL on 2/9/2010 @ 9:22pm | Good. People will get back to work. At wages that are fair with benefits to match...all earned by the sweat of their brow as they improve our community.
|
by Erik on 2/9/2010 @ 10:06pm | I revise my prediction.
I predict they will both pass by large margins. |
by DumpsterDivingDiva on 2/9/2010 @ 10:27pm | I'm still waiting!
I'm with Clover Park School District. I hope it passes! |
by jenyum on 2/9/2010 @ 10:36pm | Latest returns at 10:26 have Clover Park passing at 61.28% !
I am told late returns usually favor the schools. Tacoma has picked up a few more in favor as well: Tacoma SD No. 10 - Prop. 1 YES 18,281 64.33% NO 10,137 35.67% Tacoma SD No. 10 - Prop. 2 YES 16,647 58.57% NO 11,777 41.43% |
by jenyum on 2/10/2010 @ 5:43pm | Most recent results:
(Clover Park, I think you're safe!) Clover Park SD No. 400 - Prop. 1 Approved 5,643 62.19% Rejected 3,431 37.81% Tacoma SD No. 10 - Prop. 1 YES 21,515 65.27% NO 11,446 34.73% Tacoma SD No. 10 - Prop. 2 YES 19,538 59.26% NO 13,431 40.74% |
by DumpsterDivingDiva on 2/10/2010 @ 8:02pm | Thanks Jen!
I'm so happy it passed! |
by Non Sequitur on 2/10/2010 @ 10:51pm | Ah, a bittersweet day. Glad the levies passed, but they're way too small. They should have been at least triple what was voted on.
But I suppose we'll be able to remedy that next year when the schools come to us again. |
