Where the F... is it?

When my husband and father in law couldn't find the furnace filter, I added it to a long list of home improvement projects that alluded them. So I went under our house ( crawl space) with much confidence and a little bluster, I would find it. I did not. So I got on the internet and found illustrations to tell me where it is. Yesterday I went back down armed with a huge flashlight, screwdrivers and I even turned off the power. I took off the two panels, no filter UGH Where is it?

It most likely is supposed to go in the return inside your house. It also most likely has no specific place but just sits there and is held in place by suction. You could fabricate somthing to hold it in place when the furnace is not on. The return will be the largest vent inside the home.

our filter sits just inside the cold air return... and I should change it!

You could have an electronic air filter with nothing to replace. Even an electric filter will have a panel which needs to be washed out with some soapy water occasionally. Whatever filter you have it's located in the cold air return vent like Urban E said. Good luck.

look for the really big grate on your floor... the grate that no warm air comes out of. open the grate and you should see what looks like a giant pots-and-pans scrubber shoved in the pipe. you can pull it out and vacuum it shove it back in. of course if you aren't living in my house the directions above might be meaningless.
