The Tacoma Stars!

the perfect winter spectator sport is up with details about this year's schedule.  season tickets for TACOMA STARS' return to the realm of professional indoor soccer are available.  i saw a few of their games which were at the amateur level last year but i missed their national championships where tacoma destroyed the rest of the country.

again, according to David Falk with the Seattle Soccer Examiner,

"Marian Bowers (Stars owner) is in the midst of developing plans to build a new facility in Tacoma that will continue to serve soccer players of all ages. She is dedicated to offering programs accessible to the community at large including sending Tacoma Stars players to local schools to mentor kids. Marian is committed not only to soccer but to the betterment of the Tacoma area community. She genuinely cares about the impact her business makes on the community."

Indoor soccer- played on a basketball-court sized field. This makes for a VERY fast game.

The Stars were once a big thing in Tacoma, right after the Tacoma Dome opened in the early '80's. I actually went to a few of the games in the Dome- they were fun.

"Professional" soccer?

I'm a little confused. Is there some sort of hierarchy in the pro soccer world?
In baseball you have the minor leagues (like the AAA Rainiers). They're still professional, but they're not the majors.

Does soccer have distinctions like this? Are the Stars a "minor league" team or are they a "major league" one?

And the thing about building a new "facility". Interesting. I'd like to know more.

the professional arena soccer league (PASL) is affiliated with the premier arena soccer league which is an amateur developmental league.
i think that the idea is to be in a developmental league without pay while going through school so that students do not lose their eligibility to play at college.
but sometimes in the soccer world, the minor leagues have amateur teams which play against pro teams as was true with TACOMA's outdoor team this last summer: our players were unpaid college students while the team up in bremerton was a pro-team.

I believe that as far as indoor soccer goes, PASL is the highest in america right now. but it is nowhere as big as the now defunct NPSL from back in the 80s or its replacement MISL.

So how does this relate to the big-name teams like the Sounders?

it is a different game and different league.

indoor soccer is like jinxmedic said, on a tiny field with walls for the ball to bounce off of. it is like a mix of hockey and soccer on crack.

another difference, the sounders play in seattle and the stars play close to the tacoma dome.

their investors guide has listed some good history and plans for the future of indoor soccer in tacoma.

the stars will wear the retro jerseys of the 80s.

i got my season tickets. this should be fun. the link doesn't quite make it all of the way to the soccer center, but a bicycle shall come in handy. i don't think that there is much parking available at the center.

according to rumors as posted on the goal seattle boards 21 Oct 10:27 GS-1 wrote:

Right now she is trying to get the financing done."
beggers can't be choosers and obviously space is a factor, but hopefully it is within bike riding distance from downtown (probably improbable)

oh, probably somewhere near bellarmine high school

Thanks for the regular updates, inbloodyrise. Lack of replies doesn't necessarily mean your posts go unread.

Had to miss the opener on Saturday, but look forward to future games. (Esp. the 2nd home derby match against Kitsap in February...always fun to see good visiting support.)

i know. the stars FTW (for the win as opposed to any other versions). give and take goal for goal had us tied 3 and 3 after the second quarter. after taking advantage a couple times of being a player up (kitsap sent to the penalty box) the stars win 8-6.

it was interesting to see some of the tide players playing with some outdoor kitsap team members on the stars team. even more exciting that our first game was against kitsap. it definitely felt like a rivalry among players that have played together for a while. it did get physical but with nothing outrageously violent.

the soccer center is pretty much the same as last years season. a little bit more crowded. i noticed the vip booth had lights on and a few people inside. i heard some sounders fans doing some nice stars chants. a lot of people sang about their love for 253.

i was in the biergarten where they had bottles of beer for sale. esb and newcastle and the lights. not sure why they didn't have anything hooked up to their handles other than it might be a while before the next game.

when you come, come early for a parking spot or be willing to walk a little. the parking lot fills quick.

for more detailed info, check out the stars website or david falk's, both listed at the top.

stars lose both of their away games
san diego 8 - tacoma 6
tijuana 13 - tacoma 6

next game to be played is a free us open cup tournament on 27 Nov from 12-8pm.

and the next regular season game will be versus Wenatchee on 04 Dec at 7pm.

kitsap beat them 17-4, so i expect a thorough whipping.

by inbloodyrise on 12/17/2010 @ 10:16am
that free open cup tournament was to see who the stars will play: the Tacoma Dream Team. the next home game, 18 Dec at 7pm, will be the deciding game on who moves on in the Open Cup. apparently a lot of the Dream Team guys have connections with the Stars team over the years;

by the way, we whipped wenatchee good 10-4. we also beat california last weekend 7-5 with a couple highly contested goals. it seemed like it was close to a brawl several times. a very physical game and lots of yelling vehemently. lots of people sent to the penalty box.

by inbloodyrise on 1/17/2011 @ 9:35am
talking about brawls, someone said something about california punching one of our guys in the face this last week. all interwebs hearsay.
we are now 6-3
we play at kitsap on friday.
then back home on saturday, playing against Tijuana.
