Open Government: City of Tacoma Offers Payment Reports

From my "in" box:

City offers vendor payment reports

In an effort to be transparent, the City of Tacoma has created a Web site that enables the public to view payments made by the City. The report includes payments made by check or electronic fund transfers, but does not currently include purchase card transactions; these will be added in the future. The report also excludes payments that cannot be included due to legal requirements.

The report details the payment date, vendor name, payment amount, the department that made the purchase, the payment transaction number and the cost center name of the department. Searching on the current week includes data from the current week through the end of the previous business day. Searching on the previous week includes data from Monday through Friday of the previous week.

Items listed under the Departments field as being “Unassigned” or “9999” are warehouse purchases that do not yet have final department accounting assigned.

To use the vendor payment reporting, visit www.cityoftacoma.org/vendorpayments.

Thanks Morgan. I doubt that a layman will be able to spot suspicious payments, but perhaps an accountant with a practiced eye will. Good posting

"The report also excludes payments that cannot be included due to legal requirements."

well that's where I would hide all the good stuff. Can the city label things 'national security' or 'state secret' ?

Suppose an employee purchases a laptop computer for "the city". In reality, however the laptop ends up at the employee's home for the purpose of looking at porno. Oops, I think I just told the city staff how to beat the system.
