The Villa Caffe Coming Soon to Downtown

Driving by the colorful Villaggio Apartments today, I noticed the for lease sign had been removed from the window and in it's place a tan colored liquor license application posting for The Villa Caffe. A Google search revealed nothing. A search on the Washington State Liquor Board website reveals that the applicant is one Robyn Murphy. If anyone knows more, chime in!

Nice.

The retail space has never been filled before. Great to see some life coming to the area.

by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 10/30/2009 @ 9:33pm
A brilliant move, how this space could have stayed vacant for so long I'll never know. I'm willing to predict, right now, this will be THE place to be in Tacoma in the very near future.

by L.S.Erhardt on 10/30/2009 @ 9:58pm
Apartments=built-in customers=people+retail=good

Plus, as a bonus, Epic did a good job keeping consistency on the block by having very similar massing to the other apt building.

This is why I'm stoked by that big apartments+grocery store on 25th & Yakima that's going up. Why argue about the chicken and the egg when you can have both?

by BellCaptain on 10/31/2009 @ 11:22am
Our guests will walk either direction-up or down 13th Street so until the block fills on Pacific, I shall direct to the Market location:
I like that idea-"place to be in Tacoma in near future"-that's #2 places now !!

It is still one of the most $hiteous looking buildings built in Tacoma in the past few years. Thorax I believe Epic is the management company and not the developer. The Villa Cafe is going for a full spirits/wine/beer restaurant lounge license. Hopefully they can get a cool intimate place in there. With the liquor laws changing recently nixing the food requirement for smaller bars we should start to see more small cool places pop up.

While I do dislike the corrugated sheet metal in the design, I do like the size and massing of the building.
Granted. I would have liked to seen 15 stories instead of 2 parking/5 residential, but that's me. I just like tall buildings.

by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 11/1/2009 @ 12:24pm
Holy cats, 15 stories, have they even filled up the 5 stories they have?

by L.S.Erhardt on 11/1/2009 @ 12:26pm
As far as I know, they have a high occupancy rate. What exact percentage? I dunno. BUT I will find out for you!

But 15+ is what I'd like to see. As mentioned before, I like tall buildings.

by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 11/1/2009 @ 12:47pm
Tacoma does have some tall apartment buildings, the Vista de Rey and the Park Tower, both on Tacoma Avenue come to mind. I did live in the Park Tower in the 80s, next to top floor. Above me was a local studio for one of the TV networks. Not sure why Tacoma went through a phase of tall apartment buildings but it seems they were both built during the same era. Other than a possible view, the buildings really don't have much to recommend them by.

by L.S.Erhardt on 11/1/2009 @ 10:30pm
Here's a thought for you. This is only residential:

Vista Del Ray: 51m tall, built 1951
Park Tower: 69m tall, built 1951
Commencement Terrace: 51m tall, built in 1979
Harbor View Manor: 58m tall, built in 1969
One Stadium Way: 46m tall, built in 1973
Winthrop: 46m tall, built in 1925
Pacific Towers: 45m tall, built in 2003

1x in the 20s, 2x in the 50s, 1x in the 60s, 2x in the 70s and 1x in the 00s.
Eh, that isn't a lot. Pac Towers was the tallest thing in town built since 1984 (the Murano, 74m). I think we need more than that, especially if T-Town is going to grow by 150,000 in the next 30 years like the talking heads in Olympia say we will.
I'm anxious to see something taller than Wells Fargo (103m, 1970) go up. A 4 decade reign as tallest is too long.

by Erik on 12/26/2009 @ 10:28pm
Don't know BellCaptain but they are still working on the place!

by BellCaptain on 12/27/2009 @ 8:11pm
Thanks Erik----myself and others are ready to "hike the hill of #13th or #15th" check on the goods offered----once the place is field tested, out of towners shall be encouraged "to hike also"!!

We so need some more address's where the question of "whats do do here in D/Town Tacoma" is answered BIGTIME----is Crazy George Taco on Pacific about to due a reunion tour ?? so miss those Mexi fries at noon !

by L.S.Erhardt on 12/27/2009 @ 10:17pm
What's there to do in Downtown Tacoma?
I'd like to see a "What isn't there to do" become the norm. Here's an idea that uses the challenges of the topography to Our advantage:

We should have an annual contest to build the most awesome and efficient human-powered hill-hiking vehicle.

It could be an annual thing, to encourage the Makers among us to come out and have a good time while trying out our crazy contraptions!

...and maybe it'll gather enough stem to attract Makers Faire to T -Town some year...

by villacaffe on 12/27/2009 @ 11:51pm
MMMMMMM....Vegan Chocolate Cake and a Villa Caffe Royale...
almost almost...french press with Rogue hazelnut rum....
or maybe a Nest Salad with Organic Carrot Dressing and a Berry Tattoo??? :) Robyn

The new Satellite Coffee shop will be open soon on Market Street as well with the juice bar.

by L.S.Erhardt on 12/28/2009 @ 8:50am
@ villacaffe:

No offense, but everything you just mentioned sounds gross.

by The Jinxmedic on 12/28/2009 @ 10:21am
I like the maker's fair idea. That would be a catch.

by Emilie has one foot on shore on 12/28/2009 @ 1:51pm
@Thorax: Gotta disagree... yes, i like the girly drinks and froufy salad ingredients, and well, shoot--hazelnut rum and ANYthing with a berry tattoo sounds damn good to me. :)

by BellCaptain on 12/28/2009 @ 4:52pm
Sounds good---tighten the sneaks---its time to climb the hill ! Whats that opening date there on Market ?

by L.S.Erhardt on 12/28/2009 @ 7:17pm
Yeah, adding the word "vegan" to anything is pretty much a code word for "tastes like recycled stale cardboard from a door factory".

Yum.

by L.S.Erhardt on 12/28/2009 @ 7:18pm
A life without cheese is not a life worth living.

by Jake on 12/28/2009 @ 8:15pm
oh Thorax have you not been to Quickie Too? You won't know what hit you upside your non-vegan head ;)

by Crenshaw Sepulveda on 12/28/2009 @ 8:25pm
If you are vegan or if you are not, Quickie Too is damn good. Just another of the jewels up on hilltop. Downtown gets all the press but there are some good eats and drinks to be had on MLK.

by L.S.Erhardt on 12/28/2009 @ 8:59pm
I'm not a vegan, but I'm "90%" vegetarian. Why 90%? Because I like salmon too much. That and my bi-annual steak.

FTR, I have been to Quickie Too, but it's been so long that I can no longer remember what I got or whether I liked it.

Also, in regards to Crenshaw and MLK: You are so right about MLK, I'm one of those who are stoked about the streetcar and the good it'll bring to the hood. "Upper Tacoma" or "Hilltop" or "MLK"... it doesn't matter what you call it, that neighborhood could be the envy of all the other business districts if people would finally start showing it some love.

by BellCaptain on 12/29/2009 @ 8:47pm
Quickie Too is a slamdunk---allready in the books ---

on to the opening of this address-what date can we pre-test the goodies and start "rantin and ravin ??

by villacaffe on 1/13/2010 @ 11:10pm
Well...we are finally open! Come and see us. :)

by Erik on 1/14/2010 @ 12:21am
I had coffee at Villa today. Great cappuccino! Really. Check them out!

They also have a liquor license and sell "spirits."
