Came across this site recently: RoofRay
It's a website with a simple interface to help estimate the solar potential of your roof. Easy, right?
Well, sort of.
There are many variables in arriving at the estimate and I am not geek enough to figure out the little handle on the box you draw over your house, for example.
But here are my results:
Potential = 72%
Power per Sq. Ft. = 9.44 Watts DC
Area = 1364 Sq. Ft
Total Peak Power = 12876.89 Watts DC
I have no idea what these numbers mean, aside from the square footage area, but the numbers seem impressive!
Based on this, RoofRay gave me an estimate that it would take 34 years to break even on the cost of installing a solar system. The cost of the system: $127,374 and 42 cents. Ouch!
Not taking breakeven into account, it looked like the system would help out a lot in the summer - especially as our climate changes to become like that of Southern California.
Based on the results of RoofRay, I don't think I'm going to run out a buy a solar array in the near future.

|I was playing with this a few weeks ago. If nothing else, a kickass Google Maps mashup...|

Don't tell that to SolaRichardâ„¢ !

|Ah, but SolaRichardâ„¢ doesn't like the roof arrays. Swing by one of his open houses sometime, and you'll hear all about how much better his tracking panel does than any roof mounted solar panel, aesthetics be damned!|
Stuff on my brain.
