The New Slum-lord

KWA/Quantum Management

The Korean Womens' Association (owners) and their agents, Quantum management, have decided to discontinue the sanitation position at The Hotel Olympus - to save costs obviously.  So, once again, tenants' rights have become externalities to business owners! This new (old!) policy will degrade the living conditions there and put some at risk of heath concerns. Garbage is collected in the laundry rooms, so think about it... !

Can you give some more background to the issue?

Are you a tenant there?

What is actually changing?

Sorry for the delayed response.

"Background": This last week I noticed the on-site building manager bringing garbage down in the elevator. Not an unusual thing that it was coming down in the elevator - but it was not whom I would have expected to see doing it. I inquired whether the custodian was sick and the manager replied that he had been let go, that it wasn't his doing, and that it was "Corporate's" decision. I didn't comment any further. It was clear he wasn't happy about the extra assignment on his already taxed agenda. I've not seen any sanitation problems yet - but I imagine there will be some conflicts in the future: the man can't possibly be expected to be everywhere at once! And forgive me if I'm wrong but I believe he still manages the Winthrop as well. I've been in that building in the not too distant past and it had stiflingly god-awful odors swirling within on every floor - due to the garbage in most cases, I'm certain - which I had seen at times was over-flowing and sometimes into the halls! Now, this is all not meant to criticize the on-site mgr. personally - but I definitely wouldn't want his job! This is a criticism of Quantum, and the perhaps unwitting KWA. I've had bad experiences with Quantum before and I'm still not impressed with their performance! Tacoma Housing Authority replaced them as property management of the Salishan development on the East side (after its mismanagement there) so I'm not alone in this scrutiny of Quantum.

I thought KWA was supposed to be responsible landlords. Since they have taken over old problems with the Olympus have resurfaced.

People have taken off the screens on their apartment windows that I fought for seven years to have installed to keep drug paraphernalia, bottles, garbage, condoms, dirty diapers and people from climbing out of their windows and peering into the bedrooms of my condos.

Garbage has reappeared on my roof now and I had to call the police on Wednesday night because of the Olympus tenant blaring music and hollering until 4:30 am.

The police were great and showed up quickly and put a stop to it but it had been going on for at least five hours.

Perhaps KWA should be contacted directly and let them know of the issues with the building. I hear they have a new director.

I would hate to see the property slide downhill again.

I have resigned from being the neighborhood watchdog, it took it's toll and it doesn't seem to bother anyone else, so why should I care - it's too exhausting and hate-fest engendering. Supposedly On the Rocks is coming back in to the old Drake building so things should return to the good old days pretty quickly, with drugs, sex, and after hours swinging parties that they used to have.

Can't comment on the neighboring condos' experiences but I will comment on any further changes at the Olympus - I am hoping for changes for the good! And so far there's nothing new to report. A letter to the KWA is sound advice, though, Erik. Thanks for that suggestion.

The interim director is state Rep. Jeannie Darneille, D-Tacoma. Rattle her cage and I'm sure she'll be on top of this.

An update on the OLYMPUS. You may have noticed recently, it's getting a face lift. Quite due to the determined efforts of the on site building manager's attempts to keep it clean and pretty. So, we can disregard all past criticisms and worries since no problems have yet developed. The Olympus appears for now to be in good hands!

That's fantastic news! Looking forward to watching the progress.

nigelzfinch, I have a friend who is interested in becoming a tenant but they don't seem to have a web presence or listed phone number. Can you tell me the contact information? She needs to know the cost and basic information.
