arent we all supposed to have been eaten by scorpions by now?

by pastordavid on 5/22/2011 @ 6:37am
if you believe in the false teaching about the rapture. We are mainstream progressive congregation who do not support fear-based religion.

What kind of a god would allow a sweet little girl who was only riding her bicycle to have her head bashed in by a homocidal sociopath?

by The Jinxmedic on 5/22/2011 @ 10:18am
I'm not playing this game. Have fun, everybody.

by fredo on 5/22/2011 @ 10:38am
It would be unusual for a true "chap" to be disinterested in a discussion of the spirit world.

Ponder this question my tweed-wearing mearchaum pipe smoking friend:

do acts of violent aggression toward innocent children tend to support or refute the existence of a loving and all-powerful god?

by L.S.Erhardt on 5/22/2011 @ 12:32pm
@ Fredo: Did God create us in his image or did we create him in our image?

by pastordavid on 5/22/2011 @ 1:07pm
I believe that God created us in his image, some of us don't live up to that image in our character. Our constant call is to be a reflection of the goodnes of God. We are not promise a life that is free of trouble, horrible incidents of violence or poor character in some human beings.

by fredo on 5/22/2011 @ 1:26pm
So the hand of God is not at work in our day-to-day lives except to the extent that he created us in his image? The common nomenclature for that is a copout.

Wouldn't someone as powerful as God be able to exert a little more control?

Wouldn't more people worship God if he had made us a little bit better?

how many hot dogs do I need to sacrifice before the gods hit every illegal clear channel billboard in Tacoma with lightening and brimstone?

by The Jinxmedic on 5/22/2011 @ 6:12pm
Dear Pastor David, please don't take the bait.

And Fredo, I am actually an "exiled dastard", not a "chap" (even though I can out-chap most of those pretenders).

"do acts of violent aggression toward innocent children tend to support or refute the existence of a loving and all-powerful god?"---Fredo@10:38am

God the Creator---an uncaused self-existent eternal being---is the cause of man the creation. Since God is the Great Designer, he has attributes of will and intent. God designed man in His image with the attribute of Free Will---man has the capacity to choose between different courses of action, including whether to respect the authority of God's commandments.

If God did everything for man, then man would be responsible for nothing.

by NineInchNachos on 5/22/2011 @ 9:41pm
Do I believe in free will? Of course. I have no choice.

Mr. Mofo from the Hood,
Could god create a burrito so big even he couldn't eat all of it?

and another question...

Since the mother of Jesus is a mortal... and the father of Jesus is a god, does that make Jesus a demigod like Hercules?

by Mofo from the Hood on 5/22/2011 @ 11:20pm
1) "Could god create a burrito so big even he couldn't eat all of it?"---NIN@9:41pm

What's the basis of your assumption that God eats burrito's?

2) "Since the mother of Jesus is a mortal... and the father of Jesus is a god, does that make Jesus a demigod like Hercules?" ---NIN@9:41pm

The importance of Mary is that Jesus can point to his lineage with King David. Furthermore, since Jesus has experience as a human he can understand the trials of man.

The importance of God the Father is that Jesus freely accepted His challenge to fulfill Salvation History.

by fredo on 5/23/2011 @ 5:22am
If God is unwilling or unable to intercede in the affairs of man on earth...then what is the purpose of prayer?

by Mofo from the Hood on 5/23/2011 @ 7:22am
There are countless witnessesses and martyrs who claimed that God, who is outside the parameters of space and time, intervened space and time to answer men's prayers.

According to Christian teaching, prayer must be very specific and God's timing is different than man's timing.

The validity of Christian teaching and eyewitness accounts of answered prayers is based on their correlation to historical events in which no other explanation is satisfactory.

All: Please don't hijack other people's posts to derail the conversation into something it wasn't intended for. This was simply a local event posting and not a debate. You're welcome to start a discussion on any topic you choose over in the forum area. We all live in this great place together so please be welcoming to new participants here.

Pastor David: We also have an events calendar at feedtacoma.com/events/ that may work well for any other items you'd like to share with the community. Cheers and welcome to FeedTacoma!

kevin, the topics of the rapture and fear based religion were introduced on this thread by....pastor david.

by fredo on 5/23/2011 @ 8:42am
Sorry if I hurt anyones feelings.

What is the purpose of a religious blog if it's not to explore the meaning of life, the purpose of religion, and the roles that God and Jesus Christ play in our day-to-day affairs and decisions. I would be surprised if any man of the cloth would not be interested in these subjects or welcome inquiries.

by The Jinxmedic on 5/23/2011 @ 4:17pm
I second Kevin's comment. Lay off attacking Pastor David, already.

by NineInchNachos on 5/23/2011 @ 8:33pm
Civility people!

by NineInchNachos on 5/23/2011 @ 8:39pm
Pastor David. You can see we are all sinners here in need of moral uplift. Mofo from the Hood and The Jinx Medic are both holy men but have given up on us a long time ago. Like the prostitutes and fishermen who Jesus helped, we're good people... just ignorant.

Be our Friar Tuck

Finally a thread where it's not me hijacking it.

by pastordavid on 5/23/2011 @ 11:28pm
I came to share about a new faith community in Tacoma, not to debate people about ideas. We have a coffee hour after church to meet people and talk about ideas.

I have more pressing thiings to do, besides discussing the rapture and such as building a progressive faith community in Tacoma.

But you never know a might have to start a Theo-latte group at a local coffeeshop. But in the end, I do not proclaim to have all the answers to society problems or what God can allow or not allow. As a friend of mind stated one time, when asked what does God think about some particular issue, Her response was "I Don't Know"
