Every once in a while I acknowledge the fact that I am, indeed, a girl. On those rare occasions, I wear dresses and makeup, try not to arm wrestle boys, and even (gasp)... bake. Please don't yell at me for gender stereotyping. However, my super secret passion is crafty things. Crocheting, sewing (I'm really bad at it), decopauge, you name it.Tomorrow, we're having a baby shower at work for a co-worker and his wife. Thanks to my stupid internal clock, I am up waaay earlier than I would like to be. Especially since I didn't get to sleep until about 2am. However, it was worth it because I had an awesomely awesome birthday. My best friend called me at 8am Saturday morning to sing Happy Birthday. Knowing that was why she was calling, I didn't answer. I have her "greatest hits" saved on my voicemail and will use them to blackmail her some day (especially her rendition of "Mandi" by Barry Manilow). More »

There was a time, not so long ago, that my friends and I would go dancing until around 2 in the morning. After that, we would head to Denny's for breakfast until around 4 in the morning. Then we would go home and fall asleep around 5 in the morning. Then we would get up around 8 in the morning for work. A few years went by and while I wasn't going to Denny's at 2am, I could still close down a bar (provided my favorite drag queens were performing). More »

Final Appeal to Chalk Challengers

My offer of an intersection dedicated solely to chalk art has been met with lackluster enthusiasm. But I'm not giving up. For those that wish to beautify the streets around Fireman's Park, Matador and Meconi's, I will be at the Urban Art Festival all day Sunday and have approximately 100 sticks of chalk to contribute to the effort (sorry, no black-- don't have a BBQ). I'll even spray you with sunscreen to keep you safe in this fine weather we're having. I know LupinGoddess has offered to participate because she will have a vendor booth at the festival (she'll be behind Meconi's for those that wish to visit) and Izenmania has offered his doodling skills if he happens to be around. I sincerely hope more will join them and add to the color of the Urban Art Festival. More »

Last night I had the pleasure of being interviewed by KGRG's DIY local music show. I, along with Laura and Matt Eklund got to drive to the middle of nowhere (Green River Community College) and pimp the Urban Art Festival, happening this Sunday at Fireman's Park in Tacoma. While I'm not sure how many people actually listen to KGRG at 11pm, or how many of those people are likely to drive to Tacoma from Auburn just for the festival, it was still a fun time and a learning experience (and I got to wear the headphones). Grendel and The Pope were very nice hosts and continued to mention the festival even after we'd left the station. More »

Tonight at Jazzbones is another benefit show for the Urban Art Festival. Featured acts include Little Big Man, the Joshua Cain Band, Bumma Stoge, Fear Train Caravan, and One Way Trip. As always, there will be some sort of live painting (possibly on people), and a DJ spinning towards the end of the night. Chin's Teriyaki makes me happy

I realized today that I hadn't eaten at Chin's Teriyaki in a while. I find their lunch portions to be waaaayyyy too big so I thought I'd try the side order menu. I ordered fried mushrooms and some egg rolls. I figured the fried mushrooms would be like the mushrooms at every other teriyaki joint: small, breaded, and nummy. This is what I got. More »

Urban Art Festival Benefit Show at The Swiss

A co-worker was reading the paper this afternoon and commented on what a horrible name Beulah was (she was looking at the caption on a photo from 1940). Moments after I agreed with her, I remembered another Beulah. When I was a kid at Stanley Elementary (circa 1988-1993), Officer Mike would bring Harvey and Beulah, the talking motorcycles, to our school during assemblies. It's basically all the fluff pieces that get bumped off the front page by Olympics protests and March Madness updates. Habitat's Re-Store Rocks!

Last Saturday I finally made my way down to the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store on Puyallup Ave. This is officially my new favorite store. For four years, I worked for Home Depot and was sickened by the waste we generated every day. Perfectly good items were constantly chucked down the compactor because the package was damaged or the supplier decided they didn't want us to sell it anymore. Every time I tried to get my boss to donate items rather than tossing them, it was like pulling teeth. Every once in a while I won the battle and the Habitat For Humanity truck came by to pick up whatever I could hide in receiving for longer than a day. So finally, I made my way downtown to see what they actually DO with all that stuff. More »

Rampart Owner Steve Craig Found Dead

One of the artists from Rampart Gallery just called me to say that Steve Craig, owner of Rampart, was found dead (NOT MURDERED as I stupidly posted before) in his home. Members and friends of Rampart are planning a get together outside the building tomorrow during ArtWalk. I don't know the time yet, but if anyone's interested, I'll post as soon as I find out.
