Brick and Mortar Art Love-In

It's Official - It's a Party

ARTWALK DECEMBER 18 - Brick & Mortar Art Love-In

Tonight everyone is invited to brave the December treachery to celebrate art, artists, Chalkies, cartoonists, News Tribune editorialists that have held jobs for forty years, those just laid off from jobs, and especially those who find themselves in the country's current Kamikaze economic death spiral.

Come dressed up as a theme elf e.g. "Party Elf", "Bad Economy Elf" etc. for extra attention and fun. You won't be let in unless you CARE and SHARE - Care about Tacoma and art; Share yourself and some food (to scarf) with others. Here are the details:

WhatBrick & Mortar Art Love-In & Elf Shrine competition

Where: 811 Pacific Ave

When: 5 pm

Featured Evening Highlight:

Elf Shrine Competition with special mystery prize to be awarded to the shrine winning the most votes by people in attendance. Shrines will be proudly displayed and can be left for exhibit, or traded, gifted, or sold at the party.

- Bring a (potluck style) dish and a bottle of wine or beer. Brick and Mortar will provide the art, artists, venue space, and event liquor permit.

This event will serve the following purposes:

Give all the losers that didn't show up to Laura Hanan's recent art opening a chance to redeem themselves,

Give Tacomans a chance to show art and artists the love that they are constantly yammering about,

Give Tacomans a community building opportunity in a festive holiday environment, and

Give hipsters, the cool crowd, and all wannabes the chance to party.

Remember, according to Wikipedia:

"An elf is a creature of Germanic mythology. The elves were originally thought of as a race of minor nature and fertility gods, who are often pictured as youthful-seeming men and women of great beauty living in forests and underground places and caves, or in wells and springs. They have been portrayed to be long-lived or immortal and as beings of magical powers."

Elves are actually ancient artists!

Scout - the Elusive Cigar-Smoking Elf

"Disturbia Elf"

.....And now for some really bad seasonal elf humor:

Who sings "Blue Christmas" and makes toy guitars?

Who lives at the North Pole, makes toys and rides around in a pumpkin?

Specialty Elves

"Santa Elf"

"Timberwatch Elf"

"Pixelated Muscle Elf"

"Planter-Head Elf"

"Evil Weiner Elf"

"Harvard Elf"

"The I Wanna Be Your Special Elf, Elf"

"The Keep Away From Little Boy's Elf"

...and last but not least, everyone's family holiday favorite:

"The Welcoming Gramma Elf"

Remember this event came dangerously close to being cancelled if not for Dysphoric Elf's call to arms

"Dysphoric Elf"

Poem of Elf Despair

I came upon a doleful elf

Consumed with deep despair,

A sullen, sadling City elf

Whose heart was laid out bare

He cried to me with pounding fists

His tiny elf legs shaking,

"I was headed for the Love-in,

I even did some baking,"

He said he heard it might not be

This wondrous art affair,

"Where are the T-town hipsters

The artists that do care?"

Then suddenly that elegiac elf

Got a look I thought was gas,

And to the world he proudly shouted,

"Be at the Love-In tomorrow night or I'm gonna kick your ass!"

Great blog Scout!!

Sounds like a great event.

by Mofo from the Hood on 12/6/2008 @ 6:07pm
I was almost certain that scout was one of Mr. Anderson's battalion of avatars. He would never organize a party for pseudo-elves?

So Mofo:

My cat wants to know if this means that you and the 300 lb. canary are gonna show up to the Love-In.

My cat said he absolutely luuuuuvs the idea of the canary in an elf suit!

by Mofo from the Hood on 12/7/2008 @ 10:17am
scout, my 300-pound canary acknowledges the fact that people dress up as elves, however he does not endorse the practice.

As for the ARTWALK DECEMBER 18 - Brick & Mortar Art Love-In, I think that's a very generous invitation.

by scout on 12/7/2008 @ 1:05pm
Mofo, are you in?

by alwayssancerre on 12/8/2008 @ 7:50am
"Attendance is not a tacit endorsement of Laura Hanan’s artwork or that she is someone you want to be friends with."

Thanks for the disclaimer Laura. That should help! :-)

by izenmania on 12/8/2008 @ 1:29pm
Ooh, ooh, can I come?

by Erik on 12/8/2008 @ 3:52pm
Laura's parties rule. Last time she had Dawntown working at her party bar.

by scout on 12/8/2008 @ 4:46pm

Of course you can come! Would you be interested in playing music for trade instead of pay? The building has wonderful acoustics

by izenmania on 12/8/2008 @ 9:19pm
Sure! I like music...

by scout on 12/8/2008 @ 9:35pm
If you want to come by before December 18th to check it out first, just call 591-2787 or stop by at 811 Pacific (push top button).

by izenmania on 12/9/2008 @ 10:27am
Also, mark me down with a +1. If music is in the cards then I am bringing a cohort.

by scout on 12/9/2008 @ 12:23pm
Will do Izenman.

by scout on 12/9/2008 @ 12:24pm
Stowe and Courtney are coming too

by ALT on 12/9/2008 @ 7:39pm
Dagnabbit, I want to be there, but I'm teaching that anime class 6:00 to 7:30. What time's the party starting?

by ALT on 12/9/2008 @ 7:43pm
Correction: I just double checked my schedule and there won't be any class that day (Christmas break).

I'll be there! :)

by Dave_L on 12/9/2008 @ 10:50pm
For the elf-shrine open competition, I just hope I get some inspiration sooner than say, the night before. But pressure helps, and I think even I will give it a go.

by scout on 12/10/2008 @ 12:17am
The Night Before strategy can add a most nerve-wracking yet delicious essence to the creative brew!

by izenmania on 12/10/2008 @ 7:36am
Dave, you proved yourself an adept spontaneous speed artist the day of your 15 minute chalk clock tower.

by ALT on 12/10/2008 @ 9:13am
Indeed! The Clock Tower was a veritable three-way of artistic skill, content, and wit!

by Altered Chords on 12/10/2008 @ 9:16am
Can I bring beer instead of wine? (it will be good beer)?

What time?

by dawntown on 12/10/2008 @ 9:47am
Ill be beer-bonging in the back

by jamesstoweart on 12/10/2008 @ 9:55am
I'll join you.

by scout on 12/10/2008 @ 10:00am
Altered Chords:

Beer is an excellent idea - thanks. People are welcome to bring beer instead of wine. Can you bring a little vat w/ ice for keeping it cold? Thanks

by Dave_L on 12/10/2008 @ 6:11pm
You guys are too kind. Are there any Elf-Shrine guidelines? I have a few ideas forming, but this wannabe isn't quite sure if he's thinking in the right direction. I'll volunteer to pick up some ice and bring something beer-worthy to put it in. Someone else will have to take care of the beer-bong stuff. Let us know when a start-time is decided upon.
(Kris, thank you for always having good beer downstairs along with the wine. And Al.)

by Erik on 12/10/2008 @ 6:41pm

Can I bring beer instead of wine? (it will be good beer)?

Critical mass is forming. I can feel it

by scout on 12/10/2008 @ 11:41pm
Start time 5 pm - We should coordinate the food a bit so everyone doesn't bring pasta salad. Can you guys post what food you are bringing and in a couple of days I'll post a list people can scan to see what is needed.

Elf Shrine Guidelines: Go where your creative energy takes you - Let your Elf Self Shine! (or Shrine)

Some suggestions - Shrines can be dioramas, monologues, dialogues, songs; can be about you, about someone you love, or want to love; about Tacoma - someone I've been trying to love for a long time now - Shrines can include poetry, photos, drawings, memorabilia, jewels...Now I'm getting excited!!

by ALT on 12/12/2008 @ 10:48am
I'll bake rolls. The shape I make them in freaks my husband out, so it will be interesting to see the reaction of others.

With that statement, allow your imaginations to go wild. :P

The "I Wanna Be Your Special Elf" elf is, ah - well, that's a great get-up!

by marumaruyopparai on 12/12/2008 @ 11:58am
The I Wanna Be Your Special Elf elf is a cosplay of Xandir from the show Drawn Together on Cartoon Network. Xander is a homosexual parody of Link from The Legend of Zelda.

Maybe Mofo could dress his Three Hundred Pound Canary up like Xandir?

by scout on 12/12/2008 @ 2:55pm
marumaruyopparai's sugggestion -

"Maybe Mofo could dress his Three Hundred Pound Canary up like Xandir?" -

simply spectacular idea!

by scout on 12/12/2008 @ 4:08pm
My cat says he thinks he would look better as Xandir

Yo. Marumaruyoppari. Scout. My 300-pound canary say he don't play dat.

by scout on 12/12/2008 @ 4:56pm
He just don't know how to have fun

by Mofo from the Hood on 12/13/2008 @ 10:01am
My 300-pound canary has the nickname–Shroom–'cause he's a fungi [fun-guy].

by scout on 12/13/2008 @ 10:11am
So Mofo are you coming to the party?

by Mofo from the Hood on 12/13/2008 @ 2:38pm
scout, break it down for me–People are supposed to dress up as an elf and bring some refreshments like what, and how much stuff?

I'm thinkin' about checkin' out the artwalk but if I walk into the Brick and Mortar and interrupt an elf convention...

by scout on 12/13/2008 @ 3:44pm

Dressing up like an elf is not mandatory - just for fun. It's a potluck for everyone to bring a food item to share and either a bottle of wine or beer. It would be good if people could say what food they are bringing so we can get a balance.

There is also an Elf Shrine contest for fun - people should create these elf shrines with the materials and themes that they want. The shrines will be displayed, traded, given away, or sold. The people attending will vote for their favorite Elf Shrine and the winner will receive a special mystery prize.

All of this is to celebrate the arts and the holidays-
artists and non-artists are invited to revel and create!

by NineInchNachos on 12/14/2008 @ 6:22pm
Merry Christmas!!!!1!

The "Tinniest Upset Elf"

by Altered Chords on 12/16/2008 @ 8:57am
Altered Chords will bring some good beer and a spinach Caesar salad.

Altered Chords unfortunately, will not be able to wear elf attire. Although I do think Legolas is pretty damn cool.

Just over an hour until the party!
