Now What UP?

same shit, different year

Seriously, will any UP resident admit to voting for the same old washed up city council incumbents? There is a reason they barely won. I'm embarrassed. Stortinis is long gone. Our outstanding library is rubble and a much reduced version now resides in an ex-Napa Auto Parts location. Our tax dollars are being wasted. Dirt everywhere. And how are we supposed to get a Panera Bread now??? For criminy sakes, Lakewood has a towne center, Kent has a cool station place, Puyallup, check. I'm sure Buckley has one too (ok, not sure, don't go up there much, but it wouldn't surprise me). UP, nada.

What ineptitude. To the city manager and the town council: What is your excuse? How could you not build something when you started in 2002 with 4 years left in the biggest real estate and building boom of my generation? Jean Brooks, the problem isn't the subprime meltdown, its you, the rest of the council, and the city manager that you hired.

Yea, I'm bitter.

Do not despair,

without all that big-chain competition maybe you'll get more independent bakeries and other businesses.

Who wants another Lakewood Town Center, anyway? If you want Lakewood Town Center, it's only a few miles away.

Jen, the trouble isn't that UP doesn't have big chain businesses. The trouble is that UP has a big empty space, in which they have knocked down a whole lot of independent businesses and one of the best libraries in Pierce County with the intention of building a new town center, and development has basically crapped out entirely.

If they build it and it fills with big chain stores, fine. If it fills with small local shops, even better. But they need to GET IT BUILT.
